Therapeutic Hypothermia Treatment for an Infant with Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy and Gastroschisis: A Case Report
We present the case of a female infant with a prenatal diagnosis of gastroschisis who required a prolonged and complex resuscitation after delivery. In addition to her gastroschisis, she presented with a history and physical examination consistent with severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and was treated with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) without further compromise to her bowel. In addition, careful consideration of neuroprotection, fluid status, bowel viability, and hemodynamics were undertaken in her care. She was discharged home on full enteral feeds, with only mild language and gross motor delays at 6 months of age. T...

The Search for the Elusive Elixir of Life
By TOM EMERICK Here’s the executive summary: Most disease and health spending is age-related. As we age we get infirmities ranging from dementia to cancer to vascular disease. Nothing can prevent aging. Period. For millennia mankind has been been on a futile search to prevent aging. Search for the Elusive Elixir of Life For 3500 or more years mankind has been searching for the mythological Elixir of Life, the fountain of youth, the philosophers stone, pool of nectar, etc, that will defeat aging and extend life, if not achieve immortality. According to Wiki, “The elixir of life, also known as the elixir of immortality a...

Ideal observers from a visual-search paradigm: localization tasks and performance figures of merit
Conclusion: Anthropomorphic model observers can be devised by applying thresholds within the VS framework of this ideal observer. The ideal model thus provides a theoretical basis for VS observers that have been recently proposed [3] as surrogates for human observers in clinically realistic diagnostic imaging tasks. Research Support: This work was supported in part by NIBIB grant R01-EB012070.

Sensors, Vol. 21, Pages 3994: Privacy-Enhancing k-Nearest Neighbors Search over Mobile Social Networks
feng Xu Focusing on the diversified demands of location privacy in mobile social networks (MSNs), we propose a privacy-enhancing k-nearest neighbors search scheme over MSNs. First, we construct a dual-server architecture that incorporates location privacy and fine-grained access control. Under the above architecture, we design a lightweight location encryption algorithm to achieve a minimal cost to the user. We also propose a location re-encryption protocol and an encrypted location search protocol based on secure multi-party computation and homomorphic encryption mechanism, which achieve accurate and secure k-nearest ...

Matchmaker: NIH RePORTER’s Alternative Search
The RePORT (Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools) website provides access to a variety of reporting tools, reports, data, and analyses of NIH research activities. One of the tools available on the RePORT site is the RePORTER (RePORT Expenditures and Results) module. RePORTER is an electronic tool that allows users to search a repository of NIH-funded research projects and access publications and patents resulting from NIH funding. Matchmaker, the new RePORTER query interface, “mines the terms and concepts in your text, compares those patterns to funded projects, and returns a list of 100 similar projects.” T...

A Solution in Search of a Problem
Last week, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal’s Education Reform Commission released its draft recommendations for improving and expanding the state’s school choice programs. While some of the commission’s proposed changes are meritorious, the commission failed to recommend expanding the state’s highly popular, nearly universal scholarship tax credit (STC), instead proposing that the state create a new STC that is highly regulated and much more limited in scope. The commission’s two proposed changes to the existing STC (having the Department of Revenue count actual contributions against the tax credit cap rather than m...

In search of health information …
AbstractSearching for health information is a core activity for health library and knowledge workers, whether seeking to support health care workers in overcoming barriers to accessing drug information, exploring the potential of text mining in developing search filters, translating search filters for use on alternative databases, or the importance of updating search filters to ensure their ongoing utility.

The Autism-Spectrum Quotient and Visual Search: Shallow and Deep Autistic Endophenotypes.
Abstract A high Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) score (Baron-Cohen et al. in J Autism Dev Disord 31(1):5-17, 2001) is increasingly used as a proxy in empirical studies of perceptual mechanisms in autism. Several investigations have assessed perception in non-autistic people measured for AQ, claiming the same relationship exists between performance on perceptual tasks in high-AQ individuals as observed in autism. We question whether the similarity in performance by high-AQ individuals and autistics reflects the same underlying perceptual cause in the context of two visual search tasks administered to a large sample o...
